How LicenseReady works
1. Pick your state
Choose your state from the directory. Each state page lists the eight endorsement tests, the state's CDL agency, the permit fee, and the minimum age for both intrastate and interstate driving.
2. Drill realistic questions
Each test draws 25 multiple-choice questions from a deterministic, state-keyed shuffle of our FMCSA-aligned bank, so the same state always presents the same set — perfect for tracking your progress over multiple study sessions.
3. Read the rationale
After each answer, you see the correct response with a plain-English explanation. The explanations are based on the public-domain FMCSA CDL Manual — the same source instructors use to write the official tests.
Studying for hazardous materials?
The federal HazMat endorsement requires a TSA security threat assessment in addition to the 30-question knowledge test. Sharpen your placard recognition, segregation table knowledge, and emergency response training with our dedicated HazMat practice set.

Common CDL questions, answered
What is the minimum age for a CDL?
Federal regulations require commercial drivers to be at least 21 years old to drive across state lines (interstate commerce) or to transport hazardous materials. Most states allow drivers as young as 18 to obtain an intrastate-only CDL, valid only within that state.
What does the CDL permit test cover?
Every CDL applicant must pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80% to pass) before any endorsement. From there you add the tests required for the vehicles and cargo you intend to operate: Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Hazardous Materials, Tank Vehicles, Doubles/Triples, Passenger Transport, and School Bus.
How long is the CDL learner's permit valid?
Federally, a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) is valid for 180 days, with the option for states to renew it once for an additional 180 days without a new knowledge test. You must hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test.
